Bridge House staff at Roots & Shoots

Trust staff volunteer at Roots & Shoots

On 13 September, the Trust's staff left the office for the day to go and volunteer at Roots & Shoots near Waterloo.  The City of London encourages its staff to participate in volunteering activities and the day at Roots & Shoots was the third such occasion for the Trust.

Roots & Shoots is an environmental and educational charity based amongst the housing estates of north Lambeth in a green oasis of just under two acres. It was established in 1982 and is principally concerned with providing vocational training for young people with learning difficulties and/or social problems. Training encompasses horticulture and woodwork, often as a mechanism for teaching basic skills in literacy and numeracy.

In addition to its horticultural training the organisation operates an impressive wildlife garden (used by around 2000 schoolchildren annually) and is also home to the London Beekeepers Association.   After a tour of their state of the art training building (which incorporates solar panels and other ecological features) and gardens, the Trust's staff were put to work weeding, pruning overgrown bushes and painting the honey shed.  Roots & Shoots' compost heap had grown considerably by the end of the day!  Everyone enjoyed themselves and the garden looked much tidier as a result of all the hard work done.  Many staff went home with pots of honey and other natural products from the on-site shop.
